An EmpowerMate is a National Honor Society student in either 10th, 11th or 12th grade in high school. More often than not, this is a student who attends the same high school as your student, which means they have just mastered the course content, they know the teachers in the high school and they are able to relate both socially and academically to your learner. Time and again, EmpowerMates have proven to have a positive impact on those who attend Student Den learning centers, not just academically, but in other aspects of the child’s life as well.
When partnered with an EmpowerMate, students are matched with a tutor who is close in age to themselves and in over 70% of cases, attends the same high school as the teen they are tutoring. This has a trifold advantage.
They Know the Content: Our EmpowerMates are familiar with the course material, having just recently excelled in the course themselves- and let’s face it, they have mastered the course content much more recently than most parents have!
They Know the Teachers: The EmpowerMates are familiar with the teachers’ expectations, having had first-hand experience with their teaching style and their assignments.
They Become an Ally: Your student now knows an older student at their school- and for many younger students knowing one of the “big kids” at school is an invaluable gift; providing a familiar face, and someone who can help watch out for your student. We have heard of cases where the EmpowerMate is able to help out the student they tutor when that student has experienced instances of bullying.
The EmpowerMate program transcends just the learning experience; it adds value and depth to all aspects of the student’s life.
If we look at the way teens learn and think, the reality is, students are driven to perform better when they are working with a peer as opposed to an “old person”. When working with a peer, students do not want to appear “silly”, so they work hard and try their best to learn the content and excel in the subject they are being tutored in.
